Shishukunj Community Centre
Help us to realise our dream to a develop a centre for our community in the heart of Edgware.
Shishukunj Community Centre.....making a difference
Shishukunj has spent the last 35 years in London developing our children into future leaders of society, through the provision of high quality activities aimed at developing the potential within each individual child. In 2009 Shishukunj purchased a property in the heart of Edgware with the ambition of enhancing its great work and making a lasting difference to the surrounding community.
Our dream is for this facility to develop it into a safe, modern, accessible and flexible centre for all members of our community to be able to use. The centre will have a character that is lively, friendly and provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This new resource will enable all those that use it to develop into bright flowers that will enrich the world and provide an exciting and vibrant community hub for many future generations.

Vision
Within three years, we want the Shishukunj Community Centre to be a non-profit public space providing opportunities and environments for development, recreation, entertainment, cultural enrichment, and meetings for the wider community. The centre will rent space for events and will generate enough revenue to be financially sustainable. |
Activities and programs at the centre
The centre will provide high quality activities and programs that aim to reinforce and enhance the potential and wellbeing of people in our community. . We will strive to keep activities and programs provided by our volunteers free and have affordable charges for those serviced by external providers – ensuring that cost is not a barrier to access is an operating principle that sets us apart from many other organisations. Here are the kinds of activities and programs we envisage will benefit our children, youths and the elderly.

Volunteers Playing an Important Role
Being a charity we strive to keep our running costs as low as possible without compromising on the value, quality and safety of the centre. To do this volunteering will play a crucial role in the management of the centre and in shaping and delivering the activities. Volunteering is at the heart of Shishukunj’s philosophy and its members will again play an important role in these areas but we will continue to build increased capacity by encouraging and fostering an environment in which members of the community are actively involved and able to make a positive contribution. |
Halls and Rooms
The two halls with a capacity of accommodating some 450 people will provide multipurpose space suitable for running all the activities and will be able to stage large meetings, seminars, lectures, concerts, prayers, meditation and other cultural activities. One of the halls will also boast a flexible modular stage system to showcase children’s talent, concerts, plays, music and dance performances, and lectures.
The centre will feature several rooms to accommodate an office, library, media resource area, study/tutorial and for meetings. There will also be a recording facility to cater for the children’s ever-growing multimedia needs.
Rental Space
The centre will make available its two halls and kitchen for rent to organise all kinds of gatherings including birthday parties, conferences, events, workshops, fitness classes and more. |

Getting to the Centre
We will be encouraging visitors to cycle, walk or use public transport. There will be cycle racks at the side of the building and the centre is within walking distance from Edgware, Burnt Oak and Canon Park stations. There are frequent buses running up and down the High Street and stop outside the centre. |
Development Plans for the Building
Our development team and our architect, in consultation with the local planning authority, have designed a building that harmonizes with its surroundings and will provide a wide range of facilities. The two halls will be able to accommodate some 450 people. Part of the strategic planning of the refurbishment of the building is to keep elements that are of good quality and expend monies on new areas only. |

Fundraising Appeal - Help us Reach our Target
Our goal...is to be a beacon of light for the community. We need your help to achieve this ambitious plan to create a Shishukunj Community Centre in the heart of Edgware. For each/every child and person it will be a place to help build confidence, knowledge and have a warm feeling of pride and belonging.
Every pound donated brings the fundraising target closer, enabling the development of the current property before it is lost forever as a public space. We have a creative fundraising strategy in place that includes a musical show for the business community, participation in the London marathon, a walk, personal donations and more.

“We are hugely enthusiastic about this project and request you donate generously to this worthy cause. We will be very surprised if in 10-20 years time this has not become an important feature on the community scene not just in Edgware but in the UK.”
Shishukunj – About Us
Shishukunj is a registered charity established in August 1976. ‘Shishukunj’ (a Sanskrit word meaning a garden of children) is an organisation dedicated to the development of children, using learning through fun. It is run entirely by volunteers for the benefit of the children.
Our philosophy: “Child is the father of man”. In simple terms it means that today’s child is tomorrow’s future.
A child’s development depends on the environment. One filled with cultural fragrance and organised activities plays a significant role in giving the child a sense of good behaviour and character building. Shishukunj aims to provide a setting to cultivate and develop cultural links with our heritage and bring out their hidden talents. The activities in Shishukunj cater for moral, spiritual and mental development – a complete person.

Developing the Next Generation of society’s leaders
Shishukunj is unique in that its activities are run by teenagers and young adults, who develop a special bond with the children and act as role models for their development. All the youngsters who run the activities have themselves attended Shishukunj in their childhood and understand the Shishukunj principles and philosophy to pass onto the next generation.
Shishukunj positively encourages its teenagers to learn to look after groups of children from the age of 14, providing guidance and support to enable them to organise and deliver all the weekly activities. All events and the three London centres are led and managed by young adults in their late teens and early 20’s. Shishukunj has a structured training program for children over 14, developing key transferable skills such as project management, team-building, leadership and communication skills. This enables our teenagers and young adults to take the lead in running Shishukunj activities and equips them well for the challenges of life.
